Description

“Carmen Suite” — a one-act ballet based on the musical themes of Georges Bizet’s famous opera Carmen. Composer Rodion Shchedrin created a unique orchestrated version that preserves the full beauty and emotional depth of Bizet’s music.

The ballet was choreographed by Alberto Alonso and is inspired by Prosper Mérimée’s novella Carmen, a story about a woman’s freedom, love, passion, and inevitable tragedy.

It tells the tale of the seductive and untamable Carmen, a woman in love with freedom who rejects loyalty and constraints. Her fiery spirit and independence tragically collide with Don José’s love — a man who crosses every boundary for her.

Choreographer Gia Margania offers a modern interpretation of this story, presenting a new stage version of Carmen with the participation of Georgian performers.

Marjanishvili Theatre
Kote Marjanishvili State Academic Drama Theatre is a state theatre in Tbilisi, Georgia. It is one of the oldest and most significant theatres in the country, coming second perhaps only to the national Rustaveli Theatre. The theatre was founded in Kutaisi in 1928 by Kote Marjanishvili. It moved to Tbilisi in 1930 to the former Brothers Zubalashvili philanthropic "Public House", the building it still occupies. The theatre's art nouveau edifice was thoroughly renovated and reopened in 2006 with the premiere of Bertolt Brecht's The Threepenny Opera. The theatre building was designed by Polish architect Stefan Kryczyński, while its construction was led by another Polish architect Aleksander Rogojski, municipal architect of Tbilisi.
