Bailey is a teenager from rural Britain. She argues with her charmingly carefree but aimless father (Barry Keoghan), runs away from home, rides her scooter, hangs out with the local troublemakers, and dreams of escaping poverty—though she doesn't know where to go.
This is Arnold's first work that moves beyond social realism into magical realism, but without the "fairy tale" lightness: here, dreams regularly collide with reality, and miracles are possible but far from guaranteed. "Bird" is a film about every lost child who has ever wished for someone to stand up for them.
Barry Keoghan (Bag) on the director: "Andrea Arnold is an amazing person. She can blend into any environment; people living in difficult circumstances will trust her. This rare quality proved extremely useful while working on 'Bird.' She has the ability to see beauty even in the ugly."
