Description

Lecture: Hieronymus Bosch — Myths, Symbols, and Legacy

Bosch’s biography is a true "dark forest," and his art — a mysterious world of bizarre creatures, symbols, and metaphors reflecting the upheavals of 14th–15th century Northern Europe.

Why do we know so little about Bosch, and how do we uncover facts about artists centuries later? What myths and theories have surrounded the life and paintings of this Dutch master — and which of them might be true?

What is the artistic value of Bosch’s works? Can he be considered a pioneer of surrealism?
How was he connected to the religious and political Reformation in the Netherlands, and how did he gain fame during his lifetime?
How should we interpret his works, and what else did Bosch bring into the world besides his paintings?

The lecture will be led by Pasha Rost — painter, illustrator, and graduate of the Florence Academy of Art, Faculty of Academic Painting.
