Late Victorian era, London. Monstrous scientist Godwin (Willem Dafoe) transplants the brain of a woman (Emma Stone) who jumped into the Thames into the unborn child's head. It seems like the best film from the excellent Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos ("The Lobster," "The Favorite," "The Killing of a Sacred Deer").
The premiere at the Venice Film Festival delighted the audience: the film received 10-minute ovations. At the end of the year, many publications included "The Poor Unfortunates" in their best films of the year lists.
The Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, three Oscars: for Best Costumes, Makeup and Production Design.
