A costume adaptation of William Makepeace Thackeray's roguish novel about the virtuoso swindler Barry Lyndon, who made a rapid career against the backdrop of the Seven Years' War that engulfed Europe in the mid-18th century, only to quickly find himself at the bottom rung of the social ladder.
Lars von Trier: "Watching Stanley Kubrick's 'Barry Lyndon' is pure pleasure, like eating a very good soup. The film is completely stylized, yet through this stylization, emotions unexpectedly break through. There aren't many of them, but they are all the more powerful. Additionally, it's very atmospheric cinema. And it features fantastic cinematography, making each frame resemble the works of old masters of painting."
