A romantic drama based on the poem of the same name by Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov. Ashik-Kerib was poor but had a kind heart and a beautiful voice. He played the saz—a Turkish balalaika—glorifying the ancient heroes of Turkestan and performing at celebrations and weddings.
One day, he saw the beautiful Magul-Megeri, the daughter of a wealthy Turkish man, and fell in love with her. But would a rich man give his daughter to a poor man? Ashik-Kerib vowed to wander for seven years to acquire wealth or die. If he does not return by the appointed time, Magul-Megeri will marry another.
"Ashik-Kerib" became the last completed film by Sergey Parajanov and the last film by David Abashidze as a director and actor. The film was not released widely for a long time and only received its distribution certificate after participating in international film festivals.
The film is dedicated to the bright memory of Andrei Tarkovsky and is considered one of the examples of poetic cinema.
