🟥 Cinema, Propaganda, and Reality: The Soviet Cultural Revolution in Georgia
🟥 Annotation:
In 1928, with the announcement of the First Five-Year Plan, a turning point began in the republics of the Soviet Union. The implementation of socialism required rapid industrialization and collectivization, but these goals could not be achieved without a “cultural revolution,” which aimed at freeing the population from “harmful habits” and transforming everyday life.
One of the main components of the cultural revolution in Georgia was the campaign to remove the chadra (veil) in Adjara. Mikhail Gelovani’s propaganda film “Youth Triumphs” was created at the end of 1928 specifically to support this campaign. It was a direct result of resolutions adopted at republican and union-level cinema conferences earlier that year, which called on the film industry to more actively support the party line.
The lecture will examine how the chadra removal campaign was covered in the press, how it was portrayed in the film, and what was actually happening in reality.
🎙️ The lecture will be delivered by Salome Tsopurashvili, Assistant Professor at Ilia State University
