Philippe Winter travels along the East Coast of the United States, taking Polaroid photos and unsuccessfully searching for material for his work. The first significant event happens to him only at the airport before his flight home: a random acquaintance asks him to look after her 9-year-old daughter and disappears without a trace. The hero finds himself alone with a stranger's child and embarks on his second journey, this time across Europe, in search of the girl's relatives.
Road movies are not necessarily plotless films, but the journey itself is much more important than the destination. This is why they create such a special mood—a mood to be attentive to details and notice more than usual.
