Air Doll

A lonely man buys a sex doll from a sex shop, embodying all the stereotypes of a cute Japanese girl of indeterminate young age. An apron and maid's cap are included. However, as soon as the owner leaves for work, the doll comes to life, leaves the apartment, and starts living a much more interesting life than expected. She walks around, talks to people on the street, gets a job as a cashier at a video store, and even falls in love. She also asks childishly naive and insightful questions about human nature. In the evenings, the doll returns home to freeze in place, while her owner satisfies himself with her.

This film is a continuous convention, as is fitting for the world of inflatables and rubber. The viewer needs to suspend criticism regarding the plot, which, like having sex with a doll, doesn't even attempt to seem realistic. Why doesn't the toy's owner notice her suspicious realism? How does a girl who can barely string two words together get a job at a store? By refraining from asking silly questions, we will be rewarded with the lightness and joy of embracing a childlike view of the world. And just when the viewer begins to doubt the director's connection to the world of intellectual cinema, a young man will enter the store and ask about Theo Angelopoulos and Abbas Kiarostami.
