Description

Depictions of Georgia and references to the country on old European maps date back as far as European cartography itself.

The Golden Fleece, Colchis, Iberia, Georgia, Georgian kingdoms and principalities, and fortified cities are just a few of the fascinating details you will discover during your journey into the world of historical maps with Mappa Cartographica.

The Mappa Cartographica collection of old European maps features unique cartographic works created between the 13th and 20th centuries. Many of these pieces belong to Mappa Cartographica's prestigious Golden Collection and can be found nowhere else in Georgia.

During the tour, you will have the opportunity to view original printed editions of maps depicting the ancient, medieval, and classical traditions of European cartography, along with the historical information they contain about Georgia.

The tours will take place from October through December 2026 and will be led by Sulkhan Saladze, Director of Mappa Cartographica.

Duration: 60–70 minutes.

Children under the age of 10 may attend only when accompanied by a parent or another adult guardian.

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
