Georgian Documentary Cinema of the 1970s–1980s

From September 14 to October 26, Doca Film Club presents a new program at Amirani Cinema.

“This program feels like gathering fragments from a vast, shared archive of memory — from the 1970s and 1980s. It was a period when documentary cinema stood somewhere between myth and reality, although this very contradiction lies at the heart of the form itself. Where is reality? Where is the official voice? Where is the filmmaker’s gaze and perspective?

Tracing the transformation from Soviet reality to an independent country, the program brings together visualizations of labor; poetry and politics; distinct authorial voices; images that sometimes tell us more than the voice-over; visual and acoustic experiments; women — fighters, workers, exhausted yet unbroken; the art of observing everyday life and attempts to enter into dialogue with that reality, whether through a creative language or meticulous documentation.

Most importantly, you will encounter people’s lives, the memory of places, and unique forms created between 1967 and 1990.”
