France, 18th century. Commoner Jeanne Bécu, an illegitimate daughter of a seamstress, climbs the social ladder in Paris through the beds of aristocrats, including Count du Barry and Marshal Richelieu. With the help of her patrons, she reaches the very top: she catches the eye of the older but amorous King Louis XV (the return of "cancelled" Johnny Depp to the screen). Jeanne becomes his last official mistress, gaining immense influence at court.
Director, screenwriter, and lead actress Maïwenn has dreamed of making this film since she saw Sofia Coppola's drama "Marie Antoinette," and she was inspired by Kubrick's "Barry Lyndon" in terms of filming style, particularly it encouraged her to shoot a modern film on 35mm film.
