A retired famous composer and conductor (Michael Caine) is vacationing in the mountains with his friend, a director (Harvey Keitel). Envoys from Queen Elizabeth are tormenting him with offers to perform at Prince Philip's birthday, while his director friend is writing the script for his opus magnum. Miss World and a rising movie star stroll by. In the morning, everyone goes for treatments, in the evening they watch the entertainers, and during the day they make plans for the rest of their lives, ignoring the fact that it is inexorably drawing to a close.
