“Working Under Resource Shortage: How to Do Science ‘on Your Knees’?”

The first lecture from the series “Survival Guide (Through the Lens of Science)”

The idea of science as a “pure and independent” human activity, separate from politics, is highly romanticized and far from reality. Using examples from the work of biologists in the Russian Empire, the USSR, and Russia during the 20th and early 21st centuries, we will explore how it is technically possible — from setting up experiments to publishing results — to continue doing science in conditions of wars, repression, imprisonment, political pressure, forced emigration, and the Iron Curtain.
