Inland Empire

The most complex and multi-layered film by the «first popular surrealist,» David Lynch

More precisely, «INLAND EMPIRE» (the title, according to the author's demand, must be written in capital letters). When asked why he chose such a title, the director replied, «Because I like the word 'inland.' And I like the word 'empire.'»

The film is dedicated to the fate of an actress in Hollywood. As she immerses herself in her role, the life of the main character changes dramatically: she no longer understands where reality ends and the movie begins. Unexpectedly, the girl learns that she is not the first performer of the role. Several years ago, filming was interrupted after the actors playing the lead roles were found dead. But what worries the actress even more is that her character gradually becomes more real than she is.

Lynch serves as the writer, director, producer, cinematographer, and composer in this film. He shot it with a rather primitive model of handheld digital camera, without a finished script.

The premiere took place at the Venice Film Festival, where the director was awarded the Golden Lion for his overall achievements. Later, Lynch will say that this is his last feature film (but he will deceive everyone). The director also tried to contribute to Laura Dern's nomination for Best Actress at the Oscars in an extravagant way by positioning himself at a parking lot on Sunset Boulevard with a poster depicting the actress in one hand and a live cow on a leash in the other (however, Laura was not nominated).

The meeting will be hosted by philosopher and film scholar (and co-founder of the cinema) Varya Vlasova.
