«Raise the crow and it will peck out your eyes» is a famous saying in Spain. «Raise Ravens» is a film about a girl Ana, who is sure that her desires can magically change reality, including killing people. Ana experiences the death of a young mother who died of cancer, and soon, in a strange and unexpected way, her father, a Francoist officer, dies in the arms of his mistress. The girl remains in the care of a strict aunt, against whom she immediately rebels internally, wishing her death. The story is told on behalf of grown up and surprisingly similar to her mother Ana, many years later she will say: «I do not believe in the heavenly time of childhood, in innocence, in the natural purity of children. I remember my childhood as a long time of hopelessness, sadness, fear. Fear of the unknown».
This film reflects the consciousness of a child who is increasingly losing touch with reality in her confidence that she is the cause of frightening and painful events happening to her. In the end, there is simply no other way for Ana to survive them.
The film won the Grand Prix of the Cannes jury in 1976 and became one of the most famous Spanish films of the 70s.
