Tskaltubo Tour

A new tour — we’re heading to explore Tskaltubo’s abandoned sanatoriums!

In the mid-20th century, people travelled here from all across the Soviet Union. After the collapse of the USSR, many of the buildings were left empty. Yet Tskaltubo continues to attract travellers today, and in recent years the resort has become especially popular with those fascinated by abandoned architecture.

On this tour, we will see:

▫️ Aya and Imereti Sanatoriums — we’ll discuss how the resort’s architecture evolved from Stalinist Neoclassicism to late Soviet Modernism;

▫️ a radon water spring — we’ll learn about Tskaltubo’s mineral waters and Soviet balneology;

▫️ Bathhouses No. 8 and No. 6 — we’ll see an unusual building resembling a flying saucer and hear stories about Stalin and the Soviet elite;

▫️ Metallurg Sanatorium — we’ll explore the monumental architecture of the Soviet resort and experience the striking contrast between its grand original vision and the building’s present condition.

Throughout the trip, we will be accompanied by a historian and cultural heritage specialist.
