Originally titled Ostrov Sokrovishch (Остров сокровищ), this Soviet take on Stevenson’s TREASURE ISLAND is unlike any other adaptation. David Cherkasskiy infused the animated film with surreal visuals, unique character designs, and satirical touches that reflected the times. It gained cult status among audiences across the Eastern Bloc, remembered both for its offbeat humor and its eerie atmosphere.
Long overlooked in the West, it’s now rediscovered as a fascinating artifact of Soviet animation, standing alongside the works of Soyuzmultfilm. Seeing it on the big screen highlights its boldness and inventiveness.
