A Cannes laureate and the very essence of Kusturica’s style, summed up by its memorable tagline: "When God came down to earth he could not deal with the gypsies . . . and he took the next flight back".
Let Kusturica explain it himself — in what is essentially a declaration of love:
“Roma people are very special. They are outsiders. And I adore outsiders — their lives and their consciousness are unclouded, almost childlike; they don’t take part in our programmed way of living. For them there are only money, love, and family. That’s all. Nothing extra. I once tried to become an outsider myself, but it was already too late. I also love outcasts — they have a completely unique view of life…”
The film’s original title, Dom za vešanje, literally translates as House for Hanging, but outside the former Yugoslavia it is better known by the more neutral title Time of the Gypsies.
🏆 Best Director, Cannes Film Festival.
And the legendary music by Goran Bregović from the film still opens the official Cannes program every year.
