Sulkhani Iberieli, a renowned scientist and head of archaeological excavations at a desert monastic complex, lacks the budget needed to complete his work. He is forced to seek help from various institutions. His dedication is often seen as excessive, as others believe there are more important issues in the country.
Sulkhani is supported by a young archaeologist, Tamriko, who fights alongside him to save the monastery site — now turned into a military training ground — from destruction.
Despite their efforts, the excavations are eventually sealed and covered with earth. On his way to the city, Sulkhani dies of a heart attack in the desert field.
