Christian is a curator at a recently opened (and fictional) contemporary art museum in Stockholm. He is involved in installing an artwork by an Argentinean artist called "The Square" (which, unlike the museum, exists in reality, and its author is the film's director, Ruben Östlund). The artwork is proclaimed to be a territory of altruism. However, when Christian's wallet and phone are stolen, he quickly forgets the humanistic purpose of the project.
This biting and somewhat absurd satire targets the affluent creative class and the world of bourgeois contemporary art as a whole.
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
