The film is about the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl (played by young Saoirse Ronan), who watches from the afterlife as her grieving family mourns, regrets the simple joys of adolescence, such as first love, which she will never experience, and thirsts for punishment for the inconspicuous neighbor who took everything from her.
Unlike the book, the film omits most of the details of how the girl was tortured, raped, and killed, which, on the one hand, protects the sensitive viewer but, on the other hand, allows the imagination to run wild.
