The Island

During the war, a sailor captured by the Nazis betrayed his own captain and shot him. The fascists left the sailor for dead, but he survived — and, nursed back to health in a monastery, he became a monk. A quarter century later, Father Anatoly (played by Russian rock legend Pyotr Mamonov) continues to torment himself for the sin he committed. Among ordinary Soviet people, he is seen as a holy man. Yet the terrible sin of wartime murder still haunts him.
