The Grapes of Wrath. Meeting of the English Conversation Film Club
This Thursday, at our English conversation film club, we’ll revisit the films that won the Academy Awards long ago — at the 13th ceremony in 1940. It was a year when Alfred Hitchcock and John Ford competed for Best Director; Charlie Chaplin, James Stewart, and Henry Fonda were nominated for Best Actor; the spectacular effects-driven fantasy of the year was The Thief of Bagdad; the leading animated film was Pinocchio; and the costume drama Pride and Prejudice, starring Laurence Olivier, captivated audiences.
