On Saturday afternoon, May 16, we invite you to a literary seminar dedicated to one of the most remarkable writers of the 20th century — Louis-Ferdinand Céline.
Louis-Ferdinand Céline remains one of literature’s most controversial figures.
For most of his life, he worked as a practicing physician. After World War II, he was accused of collaborating with Vichy France.
And at night, he wrote books that inspired the Beat Generation, works that Leon Trotsky urged people to translate, and that Jean-Paul Sartre later quoted as epigraphs.
Together, we will journey through his most famous novel, Journey to the End of the Night, as well as his apocalyptic trilogy beginning with North.
But not only that.
We will explore the surreal movement of his characters, the flow of broken time, his spoken style, linguistic innovations, and syntax.
In other words — everything that makes Louis-Ferdinand Céline both a literary classic and an outsider at the same time.
Join us to discover literature that transformed the language and form of the modern novel, and to discuss why Céline’s legacy still inspires both admiration and controversy.
The seminar will be led by Nikita Nemtsev — writer, musician, essayist, and Master of Philology.
