THE COMMITMENTS follows a group of working-class Dubliners who form a soul band inspired by American rhythm and blues. Managed by an ambitious young promoter, they rehearse in cramped flats and dream of bringing Motown energy to Ireland.
The soundtrack reintroduced classic soul to new audiences in the 1990s. The performances feel raw and communal. The film shows how music travels across borders and social classes, how American soul could find a new home in Dublin.
It is also a sharp portrait of ego, ambition and group dynamics. Bands form quickly and fall apart just as fast. What remains is the music itself. The film captures that fragile, chaotic magic of people trying to sound bigger than their circumstances.
