Description

When did people first begin writing, and what did the earliest examples of written language look like? What does the living culture of the three Georgian writing systems mean?

The Tbilisi Museums Union invites you to “The Adventure of the Georgian Alphabet,” an educational program at the Ilia Chavchavadze Literary Memorial Museum.

The program explores the origins and development of one of the world's oldest writing traditions — the Georgian alphabet and its three scripts, which are included on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The program aims to promote awareness and appreciation of the Georgian language and its writing system.

Participants will discover the history of Georgian writing, learn about the circumstances that led to Georgian language reforms and the development of Georgian typefaces, and explore some of the earliest examples of printed books.

They will also examine the distinctive features of the Georgian alphabet, discuss writing systems used around the world, and complete an independent practical activity.

Participation is available both individually and in groups.

The Adventure of the Georgian Alphabet

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
