TBILISI: Secrets of the Pantheon – A Walk Through Georgia’s Most Prestigious Cemetery
The Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures is a place that reflects the very history of Georgia. Since the burial of Russian writer Griboyedov, this site has become the final resting place for people who played key roles in Georgian public life.
After the Bolsheviks came to Georgia in 1921, the totalitarian state decided to take control of memory itself. The Pantheon was created — the most prestigious cemetery in the country.
During our walk through time, we will explore how different layers of collective memory coexist in one space — and what conflicts arise between them.
We will also discuss Stalinism in contemporary Georgia and the public's relationship with the Soviet past.
