Paul Lewis is widely regarded as one of the finest pianists of his generation. His acclaimed concert cycles devoted to the piano works of Beethoven and Schubert have earned unanimous praise from audiences and critics worldwide, establishing him as one of today's most distinguished interpreters of the classical repertoire.
His numerous awards include the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist of the Year Award, two Edison Awards, three Gramophone Awards, the Diapason d’Or de l’Année, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Premio Internazionale Accademia Musicale Chigiana, and the South Bank Show Classical Music Award.
Lewis holds honorary degrees from the Universities of Liverpool, Edge Hill, and Southampton. In 2016, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
He regularly performs with leading orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and The Cleveland Orchestra.
He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Joan Havill and later worked closely with Alfred Brendel. Lewis also serves as Artistic Director of the UK chamber music festival Midsummer Music.
