High school student Shizuku loves to spend all her free time reading. One day, she notices that the name of the same teenager appears on the library card for all the books she takes from her school library. After meeting him, Shizuku immerses herself in the whirlwind of first love. As often happens in Studio Ghibli films, reality and fantasy intertwine here to complete inseparability. Amazing worlds begin to grow in Shizuku's mind and on the screen, which she writes about in her own book.
The adaptation of the manga about book-loving high school girl Shizuku was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, one of the leading animators at Ghibli (he worked on "Kiki's Delivery Service" and "Grave of the Fireflies"). The fantastic landscapes were created by the renowned Japanese artist Naochisa Inoue. Flying islands and miniature planets, amazing towers, and strange structures are contrasted with the accurately reproduced city blocks of Tama, one of the most famous urban planning projects in Japan from the 1960s, where Shizuku lives.
