“He is one of the greatest pianists I have ever heard” — Ahmad Jamal (Frederick Russell Jones), one of Miles Davis’ favorite jazz pianists, on Shahin Novrasli.
With a modal nature, an improvisational spirit, academic depth, and Azerbaijani roots, every touch of Novrasli’s fingers reveals a form of cultural alchemy.
His music is a dynamic fusion of jazz, classical music, and mugham — a traditional Azerbaijani folk art form passed down through generations. His style reflects the essence of his homeland, the “Land of Fire”; jazz-mugham is where East meets West, echoing the country’s unique heritage and the iconic buta symbol — a sign of rebirth and evolution.
The Shahin Novrasli Trio will open the Soso Lagidze International Arts Festival “Tbilisi Rhythm” on May 11 at the Grand Hall of the Tbilisi State Conservatoire.
