Larry Gopnik is a professor at a Jewish college in the Midwest in 1967. He begins to question the meaning of life as problems pile up: his wife demands a divorce, his kids steal money from his wallet, his lazy brother moves in permanently, anonymous letters threaten his career, a pushy student insists on a better grade, and an attractive neighbor tempts him with her naked body. To address these issues, Larry turns to rabbis for guidance.
