The best, in our opinion, dedication to the era of silent cinema
The elderly silent movie star, Norma Desmond, lives in her imaginary world - she is sure that she is still famous and popular. This illusion is supported by her faithful butler, who writes letters to Norma on behalf of fans and protects her in every possible way from the disappointing truth. The invasion of reality, however, is inevitable.
Sunset Boulevard is a unique film. Director Billy Wilder made sure that the main character was played by a real silent movie star Gloria Swanson, and her butler was the famous in the past director Erich von Stroheim, who filmed the young Swanson. In addition, other cult figures appear in the episodes, such as Buster Keaton.
In Hollywood and subsequently there were attempts to pay tribute to the era of the Great Silent, as, for example, in the Oscar-winning «Artist» of 2011, but I think no one since «Sunset Boulevard» has managed to do it so thoughtfully and subtly.
Three Oscars and four Golden Globes, including for Best Actress and Best Director.
The screening will be followed by a discussion led by clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and psychology lecturer Irina Kozlova.
