On Monday evening, we invite you to discuss resistance during the years of Perestroika and the path that led to August 1991.
This is not only the story of Gorbachev’s congresses.
It is about rallies and elections, the “Democratic Russia” movement and the Democratic Union, the underground “White Cross” in St. Petersburg, Vladimir Vorontsov’s shots in Kaluga, and street uprisings in Morshansk, Alapayevsk, and Chelyabinsk.
We will discuss how the country sustained resistance, what forms it took, and what legacy society carried into the free 1990s. We will also reflect on how this memory helps us understand why the encounter with Putinism unfolded the way it did.
Join us to remember, reflect, and feel the continuity of the struggle for freedom.
The meeting will be led by journalist and historian Vadim Lifshits.
