American actor Phillip (Fraser) has been living in Japan for seven years, yet his most successful project to date remains an absurd toothpaste commercial. Out of desperation, he agrees to a contract with a “Family for Rent” agency, where he is hired to stand in for other people’s relatives — an emotionally distant father, or the fiancé of a young woman who plans to secretly get married and move to Canada.
Fraser’s tour de force charmed audiences, earning a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and the U.S. National Board of Review included the film in its Top Ten Movies of the Year.
