Friends!
We’ve come up with something so exciting, it’s hard to describe briefly — so we’re writing in detail.
We’re organizing a creative offline laboratory in the mountains of Kazbegi, from August 4 to 17.
That alone is already pretty great: a journey, in-person connection, a sea of creative practices in breathtaking nature, easy transfer from anywhere, and a way to escape the summer heat.
But the main thing — is the theme of the lab.
This will be a real-time animation laboratory.
We usually think of animation as a film.
But what if the animated film is created live — in real time?
What are the elements of our experience and sensory memory?
Can we improvise with them as freely as in a music jam?
Can we rehearse an animation like a play?
In this lab, animation will stop being a film.
It will become performative art, going beyond timelines and editing, transforming into a live show that exists only here and now.
Using the language of animation —
combining VJing, storytelling, and audio performance —
we’ll tell stories on screen in real time.
We will:
• explore VJ software, including Resolume Arena,
• dive into the nuances of animated movement and loops,
• experiment with print-based animation techniques,
• create soundscapes with musicians and sound designers,
• explore alternatives to traditional editing and directing.
The final result will be a screen performance — a live animated show where each participant tells their own story.
‼The lab can be combined with remote work.
If you work online, creative sessions will take place outside your working hours.
Cost of participation (including accommodation in Stepantsminda, Kazbegi):
• $470 — if you apply before June 30
• $590 — if you apply after
The fee includes accommodation in a guesthouse and all creative sessions.
It does not include food or transfer.
Kazbegi is easy and inexpensive to reach from Tbilisi,
and also accessible via Vladikavkaz airport, with low-cost flights available.
To apply,
send your application to realtimeanima@gmail.com
Please attach a short essay about yourself, your creative background, and why you’d like to join the lab.
Applications are now open!
