Breaking the Waves

Bess is a girl with peculiarities and a local fool. She marries the handsome Jan and wants nothing more than for him to always be by her side. God interprets her desire in a peculiar way: as a result of an accident on an oil rig, Jan is confined to a bed and truly cannot escape from her. Now Bess is willing to do anything to save her husband, even sacrificing herself.

The «Golden Heart» trilogy is von Trier's most important triptych about modern holy fools, blessed martyrs ready to make absurd sacrifices that the world cannot understand. He manipulates the audience, plays with their emotions, and is unafraid of straightforwardness and vulgarity in pursuit of the ultimate question: where is the boundary between holiness and sin?
