Description

Raphael — the genius who perfected art… and nearly destroyed it by doing so.
A true Renaissance polymath: not only a painter, but also a successful architect, curator, and visionary.

At 25, he became the chief artist of the Papal court.
At 31, he was appointed head architect of St. Peter’s Basilica.
And he was the first in history to initiate the systematic preservation of ancient monuments.

At this talk, we’ll explore how Raphael became the embodiment of the ideal — and why that turned out to be more dangerous than it seems.
The lecture will be led by Irina Korchagina, art historian (Moscow State University), lecturer, curator, and author of several courses on art.
