Description

Natan Shcharansky is a former Soviet dissident and successful Israeli politician. He fought for the right of Soviet Jews to repatriate to Israel and was one of the founders of the Moscow Helsinki Group. Shcharansky was arrested in March 1977 on charges of “treason,” espionage and anti-Soviet agitation, sentenced to 13 years in prison and released in 1986, during perestroika, after numerous demonstrations around the world. Five years later, in 1991, the book “I Will Fear No Evil” was first published in Russian, in which Shcharansky tells about his struggle against the Soviet authorities This book is at once a psychological thriller, a political detective, and a profound reflection on the nature of totalitarianism. While in prison, Alexei Navalny read Shcharansky's book, corresponded with the author, and mentioned it in his first statement (https://meduza.io/feature/2023/08/11/ya-besheno-nenavizhu-teh-kto-prodal-istoricheskiy-shans-rossii-nenavizhu-eltsina-chubaysa-i-vsyu-prodazhnuyu-semeyku-kto-postavil-putina-u-vlasti) after receiving a 19-year sentence for “extremism”.
