Imagine a struggling musician who plays weddings for a living and one day meets a former boy band star. After a late-night jam session, he shares one of his songs with him. Soon, the song becomes a worldwide hit — only someone else is singing it. The aspiring musician isn’t after millions of dollars or global fame; he just wants his acquaintance to acknowledge that he had a hand in writing the track. Looks like he’ll have to head to Los Angeles and sort things out in person.
A musical dramedy by John Carney (Once, The Riff-Raff). Carney was once the bassist in Glen Hansard’s band, then made Once, a film about Hansard that brought both of them fame. Since then, Carney has made a whole string of heartfelt dramedies, every single one of them about musicians.
