The film touches on numerous painful issues related to motherhood — and separately, fatherhood. Is abortion a crime against the unborn? Can one abandon a child if it is clear that it would be better for them? What is preferable: a state system or private initiative?
This is precisely the area where people are invariably ready to tear each other's throats out. That makes Kore-eda's measured stance and his peaceful tone all the more valuable: by avoiding both clichés and radical gestures, he primarily calls for not judging and refraining from harmful, deadly generalizations.
