Screening and Discussion of the Film "Return to Seoul" (Davy Chou, 2022)
The film tells the story of 25-year-old Freddy, a French woman of Korean descent, who returns to Seoul for the first time — the city where she was born but was adopted by a French family. This spontaneous journey becomes an emotional quest for identity, a reunion with her biological father, and an attempt to understand her place between two cultures.
In making the film, French director of Cambodian descent Davy Chou was inspired by the story of a friend who traveled from France to Korea in hopes of meeting her biological family. At the same time, he is drawn to the dilemma faced by first-generation migrant children: which country do they truly belong to, and how can they define themselves? This internal conflict has become an important theme in contemporary auteur and mainstream cinema, as young directors increasingly turn to their own roots.
