73-year-old Alvin Straight, who is experiencing health problems, lives with his daughter Rose in the quiet provincial town of Laurens, Iowa. One day, he learns that his brother Lyle, who lives in Wisconsin and with whom he hasn't spoken in 10 years after a quarrel, has had a heart attack. Alvin decides to visit his brother, but since he doesn't have a driver's license and stubbornly refuses to take the bus, he buys a used lawnmower and sets off on a journey nearly 500 kilometers long...
