Pluribus (Episodes 1–4)

People receive a signal from space, decipher it, and discover a DNA code. Recreating it, they produce an unprecedentedly contagious virus. It quickly spreads to almost all of humanity, killing some, while the survivors merge into a single global consciousness — a human hive mind that calls itself We. This consciousness has its own peculiar ethics, is unbelievably happy, and believes that the highest good is to assimilate as many beings as possible. The problem is that only eight people on Earth remain immune to the virus for reasons unknown, including Carol, a writer who is fiercely opposed to becoming part of this blissful collective.

My favorite series of last year. It’s a great way to think about the boundaries between the personal and the collective, about how deeply interconnected people are, and how irreparably separate they can be. As I love, it raises a lot of tricky questions and answers almost none of them, leaving us, the viewers, plenty of room for our own thoughts.
