One of the most important films of the French new wave, an avant-garde variation on the theme of Bonnie and Clyde. The main character Ferdinand runs away from his rich wife along with his child's nanny. The couple goes to the sea in a stolen car full of stolen money.
This film - one of Godard's most famous - influenced many generations of directors from all over the world, from Quentin Tarantino to Xavier Dolan. The famous poet and novelist Louis Aragon claimed that modern art is Pierrot le fou (mad Pierrot). It has everything for which Godard is loved (or unloved): playing with colors («It's not blood, just red!»), tricky dialogues, quotes and auto quotes from famous movies.
Pierrot le fou is the nickname of a famous French criminal who, in his twenties, managed to be a raider, a gangster, a Gestapo officer, a hero of the Resistance, and then a gangster again. The film is not about him, but it was with him that the French associated the name of the picture.
