Description

Friends, there are still tickets available for the one and only screening of the theatrical musical Nord-Ost, which we are presenting in celebration of the 25th anniversary of its premiere.

You are, of course, familiar with its tragic history. The tragedy that claimed the lives of around 150 people overshadowed the fact that Nord-Ost was, in fact, a landmark Russian musical, unmatched both before and since.

This is no exaggeration. Its creators set themselves an extraordinary challenge: to build a Broadway-level production from scratch, comparable to Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera.

The performers had to be able to act, sing, and dance. No such theatrical training tradition existed in Russia at the time, so professional actors, rather than singers, were recruited and subsequently trained in vocals and choreography.

The production was designed to run every single day, with no days off, no sick leave, and practically no holidays.

An entire children's acting center, “Nordostiki,” was also established. Since the musical was intended to run for many years, a new children's cast was continuously trained alongside the performances, ready to replace the existing young actors as they grew older.

An entire theatre was completely refitted and partially reconstructed for this single production. The sets were built directly into the building's foundations, while a full-scale model of a bomber aircraft was suspended high above the stage on a complex system of rails and cables. At the right moment, it would “fly” into view and make a spectacular landing onstage.

The musical was written, produced, and directed by just two people: Alexey Ivashchenko and Georgy Vasilyev, known throughout Russia as the musical duo Ivasi.

For an entire year, the show ran daily at the Dubrovka Theatre Centre, playing to sold-out audiences every evening. Nord-Ost was even promoted as one of Moscow's main attractions: the Kremlin in the morning, Nord-Ost in the evening.

And then tragedy struck.

The production was revived, but both its name and the theatre itself had become inseparably associated with the terrorist attack. Six months later, the project had to close: the auditorium was only half full, and performances were becoming financially unsustainable.

But the producers found a solution: they decided to turn Nord-Ost into a touring musical.

A new touring version was developed, complete with enormous new sets that required eight 40-foot trucks to transport across the country.

And once again, success! Long queues for tickets, packed theatres, and overwhelming public affection and admiration.

But then...

Suddenly, theatres began cancelling their contracts with Nord-Ost. The explanation was simple: the money to revive the production had come from Mikhail Khodorkovsky, shortly before he fell out of political favor and was imprisoned for ten years.

And so Nord-Ost was forced to move for a second time.

We will be screening the original, non-touring version of the musical in high quality, on the big screen, simultaneously in two screening rooms.

The recording was painstakingly reconstructed from fragments and significantly enhanced by enthusiast Konstantin Okunkov, to whom we owe a special thank-you.

❗️ The screening will be in Russian, without subtitles. We have permission for one screening only, so there will be no repeat!

🍰 After the screening, we'll host a small celebration in honor of the legendary musical's 25th anniversary.

If you'd like to congratulate Ivashchenko and Vasilyev, prepare a message! We'll record and edit your greetings and send them to the creators the following day.
