A Tour of Non-Touristy Tbilisi

Until the 19th century, the two banks of the Mtkvari River led very different lives: the right bank was a centre of active trade and urban growth, while the left remained a quiet outskirts of villages and gardens. But when German settlers from Swabia moved to the left side of the city, Tbilisi began to change.

On the tour, we’ll discuss:

• why the left bank became a testing ground for architectural experiments;
• what remains of the city’s German heritage and where to look for Tbilisi Art Nouveau;
• how Mount Ararat and a volcanic eruption in Indonesia are connected to the development of the district;
• where on the left bank to find some of the best lobio and freshly fried doughnuts, popular enough to draw daily queues of locals.

The tour will be led by Eka Eliseeva — a Kartvelologist and researcher of Tbilisi.
