Modernism. East–West
Late 19th century. Electricity. The internal combustion engine. Trams, steamships, the telegraph… in short, the Industrial Revolution. In the air — a sense of the inevitable collapse of the Old World and anxiety about what the New one will be.
How does art respond to this?
It flares up with all the shades of sunset and gives birth to what is (so far) the most expensive artistic style in human history — Modernism / Art Nouveau. In different countries, it would receive different names.
So, in a rapid tour across Europe, we will talk about:
English Glasgow Style: Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Aubrey Beardsley
French Art Nouveau: Hector Guimard and Alphonse Mucha
Russian Modern: Fyodor Schechtel and Konstantin Somov
