The film consists of two unequal parts. First, Lynch tells about a strange meeting between two women — Betty and a mysterious brunette who got into a car accident in the first frames of the film and forgot everything, even her own name. Then, at the moment of the highest tension of the plot, the story begins anew. The characters are the same. But everything is different. The first thing the viewer is forced to think about leaving the hall: «What really happened?»

At the Cannes press conference, the host addressed Lynch immediately after he came out to them: «Dear Mr. Lynch, we are amazed by what we saw, but would you be so kind to explain what exactly we saw?» Lynch was not at a loss — he pretended not to hear and replied, smiling sunnily: «Yes, yes, I am very glad to be here in Cannes again!»
