A lighthearted, but sweet and not silly romantic retro-comedy, thoroughly infused with nostalgia for the 70s.
An unusually mature and ambitious 15-year-old boy flirts with a girl ten years his senior. The action takes place in California in 1973, and the filmmakers exploit the audience's tendency to yearn for distant times that they never lived through. The soundtrack is packed with hits by The Who, Morrison, and McCartney, while the fashion and setting are recreated precisely, tastefully, and with a hint of scruffiness, without snobbery or gloss. In short, it's two hours of joy and sweetness.
The cast includes Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper, Tom Waits, and Leonardo DiCaprio's father.
🏆 Three awards from the National Board of Review, including "Best Film," and four Golden Globe nominations; moreover, the American Film Institute named "Licorice Pizza" one of the best films of 2021.
